ॐ How to Choose the Right Spiritual Book for You?
In today’s day and age, countless are the channels and platforms from which one is bombarded with inputs and advice, most of it designed to be consumed as small bites. As a result, a meaningful exploration of anything is rare, ironically when depth and a studied approach are needed the most.
There is certainly something to be said about the role of books in one’s life, for the way that they allow one to get absorbed and engrossed with a topic (for longer than the 20-60 seconds that social and interactive media offer). When it comes to spiritual literature in particular, the right book can play the role of a guide and advisor, addressing one’s concerns in what feels like a very personal way. After all, the subject matter relates so directly to the reader!
When one knows that a bitty, superficial approach cannot possibly be enough, one has to find the right book and dive in. Not sure how? We are here to help!
First and foremost
Invest some time in browsing, whether it is at a bookshop or e-shop. If you don’t know what’s out there, how will you choose? One can go by category, by author, by title or even by how attractive and relatable the cover and layout are. If it speaks to you from the word go, you will want to engage further with it.
Auth(or)enticity
When it comes to spiritual literature, choose the work of an author who doesn’t just scratch the surface. Engage with their teachings in various ways and develop a bond with their words, which will also give you a glimpse into their greatness. Swami Chinmayananda has said, “Meet me in my books.” When that connection is formed, one processes such content so much more effortlessly. If the writer walks the talk, you will also be encouraged to apply the teachings with authenticity and integrity.
Where you stand now
The right spiritual book will be like a mirror, giving you a true glimpse into yourself. But to choose it, you will need some kind of an idea about your questions, concerns, situation in life and even pre-dominant personality type. For example, if you happen to be an over-active, over-worked corporate employee who wants to know how to achieve peace in a restless world, diving immediately into a highly technically-worded advanced text of Vedanta may not be the right way. Start where you are.
Extend your exploration
The beauty about spiritual literature is that one can approach it systematically for an entire programme of study, if one wishes to. Start with the beginners’ texts and deepen your study with a step-by-step approach. One can even do that in terms of topics. For example, there are books of various kinds on the topic of Bhakti (devotion). Take baby steps to Divinity and you will soon find you’ve moved forward in leaps and bounds!
Spiritual Staples
A text like the Bhagavad Gita is a must-have for every spiritual seeker. Swami Chinmayananda’s commentary, titled “The Holy Geeta” is a companion for life; it will never fail you. Even if you feel you may not be ready to study the Gita yet, get a copy anyway. Keep it with you. You will find each other at the right time!
